About us

Built in 1850 as Torquay rode a wave of popularity following the opening of its train station, and therefore easy access from around the country, the building we now call the Meadfoot Bay Hotel, was originally built we believe for a retired naval officer. Name and rank unknown!

Its conversion to a hotel can be traced back to the early 20th century when it offered accommodation on a 'demi pension' basis for four shillings and sixpence a week (that's around 25p!). Times have changed and guests have come and gone. Not always without leaving a little history behind them. Indeed legend has it that back in the 1970s, the hotel had become a favourite venue for those wanting to kick back and escape the public eye. In the cellar bar (sadly no longer but never say never), it's said the original 'Rocket Man' spent many a happy hour.

Today Meadfoot Bay Hotel, the name given to it only in the last twenty years or so, has earned an enviable repuatation with its peers in Torquay, largely as a result of the efforts of its previous owners the Waters family who owned the property for 12 years.

We are still a family run business, the current owners Vicki Osborne and Phil Harnett bought the hotel in April 2017 after deciding to leave their home of many years in North London and move down to the English Riviera. Having spent many years in marketing working extensively in travel and leisure and other business sectors, they are bringing much of that experience to bear as they look to develop the next phase in the life of this much loved property. They are both very hands on at the hotel so you are almost certain to meet them both when you come and stay.

Our general manager Jody comes from a catering and hospitality background, starting life as a chef in France before moving his way up the ladder to higher management in hotels here in Devon. He is very passionate about the industry and loves every aspect of it.
