Golf in Torquay, Torbay and Devon (part 1)

Posted on November 7th 2015 by

Golf and the standard of Golf Courses in Devon and in the Torbay area continues to impress and improve year on year. I believe that the standard of the nearby courses and professionalism in which they are run ranks highly with the best courses and golfing areas in the UK. I have always grown up with golf as it has always been the main sport in our family, also not surprising when your father is a well respected qualified PGA Golf Professional.

We hope this blog post will serve as a good place to start when researching your upcoming golf holiday to Torquay and The English Riviera. We help hundreds of guests who stay with us here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel to organise their golf holiday to Torquay. With expert knowledge and personal links to the professionals and course managers we are able to advise the best places to play based on your golfing ambitions and skill level.

Golf Courses in and around Torquay and the Torbay area:

Torquay Golf Club

Founded in 1909 Torquay Golf Club is a first class 18 hole parkland style course set in beautiful surroundings with some truly amazing views across Torbay. Visitor green fees are available throughout the week and weekend although pre-booking is advised.

Teignmouth Golf Club

Teignmouth Golf Club was opened in 1924 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie. Teignmouth Golf Course is an 18 hole moorland links course that is true test of your golfing ability. I can confirm this as I have lost far too many golf balls around here. The course boasts some stunning views of the sea and nearby moors with visitor green fees available throughout the week and weekend.

Churston Golf Club

Churston is my one of my favourite courses in the Torbay area. I am a bit biased as I used to be a member here but I love the layout of the course. I have found that Churston is a little unique in that on a calm day it can play like a parkland style course but on a windy day it can play like a links style course. There are stunning views across Torbay to be enjoyed with all 18 holes being a great test of your golfing ability. Facilities are modern and visitor green fees are available throughout the week and weekend.

Dainton Park

Dainton Park is one of the youngest golf courses in Torbay but is improving every year as it matures. It is a classic parkland style course that was opened in 1993 and is set in 125 acres. The course enjoys great views over Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams. Visitor green fees are available throughout the week and weekend.

Stover Golf Club

Another one of my favourites in the area is Stover Golf Club. The course enjoys a reputation as one of the best parkland Golf Courses in the South West of England and is easily accessed from the A38 and M5. Stover is a 18 hole course with the design influenced by 5 times British Open Champion James Braid. Visitor green fees are available throughout the week and weekend.

This is just a snapshot in my opinion of some of the best golf courses located relatively close to us here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay.
